about
This song is set in New Orleans. During hurricane Katrina, in the New Orleans Parish prison building, Templeman III, there were hundreds of inmates, water was rising in parts of the jail, and there were few to no guards available. I met one of the inmates a couple years after. I would have gotten his name if I’d have realized it would lead to a song. At the time it was just listening to a man at a bar. But his strange combination of resignation, mirth, and lack of appreciable angry resonated with me. I will never fully understand the guy, but I tried.
1 The poverty line and the water line
2 New Orleans has unique funeral traditions.
3 The ‘second line’ in a jazz funeral tradition, are the people walking behind the band.
4 “Oh, when the stars fall from the sky..., 5 I want to be in that number, When the saints go marching in. Oh, when the moon turns red with blood..I want to be in that number..When the saints go marching in.”
lyrics
Healing in a hole outside, I hear my best friend’s
my worst friend’s early waking sounds
My spirit was up at least an hour before my brain
Already defeated, already hardening
Always the law liked me best, often guilty of mere disrespect
By fear or flesh, I’ve been locked down
In these walls I was born to see, soon the water is gonna rise
No surprise to me, living below the line1
Will you to dance for me
When they march thru the streets?2
Going over what’s-it-called (Jordan)
The next time we meet
Tell my name to the second line3
Sing 'Closer Walk’ for me
When the moon is red and the stars fall4
I’ll be swimming here, swimming in my sleep
Will I be just a number5 when the water’s done rushing in?
Just another saint, another sin
Yeah I know I could've left long ago, not like I didn’t know how to survive
I know not every city eats it's own, but not every city is alive

What are foglings? No one knows for sure. They've been seen fleetingly for centuries that we know of. Blamed for actions good, bad, or mischievous, are they supernatural, extraterrestrial, something we have not yet imagined?
